CAIRO, Jan 24 (Aswat Masriya) – An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded on the railroad in Zagazig, Sharqiya, injuring one and halting traffic, reported state-run news agency MENA.
A source within the Sharqiya railroad authority said that security forces combed the area surrounding the explosion and dismantled three more explosive devices fixed to the railtrack, reported MENA.
The source added that the authority declared a state of emergency and established a team of engineers and technicians to fix the damaged railtrack.
Egypt's security forces have intensified their security measures in reaction to repeated militant attacks that target army and police officials. The attacks rose significantly since the military ouster of former President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, after mass protests against his rule.
Attacks started in the Sinai Peninsula but soon expanded to other areas of the country, including the capital.
Blasts in residential areas are usually carried out using IEDs.
Railroad explosions have become a common occurrence recently. An IED exploded in the last cart of a train in the Menuf train station on November 5, 2014, killing four and injuring eight.
At least two explosions on the Sharqiya railroad have been reported in November.
