President-elect Mohamed Mursi took the oath of office at the Supreme Constitutional Court headquarters at Maadi on Saturday, becoming the fifth president of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
“I swear by Almighty God to uphold the Republican system with loyalty, to respect the constitution and the law, and to look after the interests of the people fully and to safeguard the independence of territorial integrity of the motherland,” Mursi swore.
After taking the oath, Mursi saluted the Egyptian people and the head and members of the constitutional court.
The president-elect will shortly address the nation in a speech that will be given at Cairo University in the presence of a number of public figures and members of the military council whose executive authority ended as Mursi was sworn in.
