Hundreds of public prosecutors staged a demonstration by Egypt's Court of Cassation on Monday, demanding the resignation of the newly-appointed Attorney General.

The protesters threatened a strike if Attorney General Talaat Abdullah was to refuse to step down from power.

A few hundred conscripts and state security forces cordoned the court - that is also the Attorney General's office - in order to contain the situation and prevent chaos.

The prosecution’s general committee had asked Abdullah and the Minister of Justice, Ahmed Mekki, to step down on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a number of Cairo prosecutions resumed their strike on Monday until their demands are met.
