CAIRO, Nov 4 (Aswat Masriya) – The University of Sohag suspended all classes in its new campus until a new road to the campus is inaugurated, following a deadly crash on Sunday which left over ten female students killed.

The university's council held an emergency meeting on Monday night to discuss the repercussions of the car crash. They said in the meeting that classes will be temporarily held in the old campus until the new road becomes operable.

A decision was issued in 2000 ordering the construction of the new university campus at a mountainous area. The new campus was constructed at the cost of almost one billion Egyptian pounds, a statement by the university council said.

Hundreds of university students protested on Monday the conditions of the road where the crash happened, saying that it is "unpaved".

A new road is currently under construction and due to be inaugurated next Saturday, the university chairman said in a statement.

The university also issued compensations worth of 20 thousand Egyptian pounds for the family of each student who was killed, and 10 thousand Egyptian pounds for each injured student.

Road accidents are a common occurrence in Egypt, being among the prime causes of death in the Arab world's most populous country.

According to a report released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) in June, the number of car accidents occurring in Egypt in 2013 rose by 0.4 percent when compared to the 2012 figure.
