Cairo, Jan 27 (Aswat Masriya) – Egypt's armed forces killed three "terrorists" during raids in North Sinai's city of al-Arish between Wednesday and Monday, the army spokesman said.

Armed Forces Spokesman Mohamed Samir added in a statement on Tuesday that the army arrested 17 wanted individuals and 40 suspects during its raids.

Forces also arrested 11 armed suspects attempting to "target a military unit in Cairo," Samir said. He added that they are currently being questioned by the concerned security authorities.

Militants have escalated attacks targeting security forces in Egypt, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula, since the army's ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, which came after mass protests against his rule.

The deadliest militant attack since Mursi's ouster left at least 30 military personnel dead, in a suicide operation which targeted a security checkpoint in Sinai's Sheikh Zuweid on October 24, 2014.
