The National Salvation Front warned on Thursday against using mosques and Friday prayer sermons in political conflicts or for promoting a certain stance in the second phase of Egypt's constitution referendum whether for or against the constitution.

The front called on the Ministry of Endowments to alert the imams of mosques to steer away from controversial political topics.

Clashes erupted last Friday in several governorates following the Friday prayer as mosque imams tried to influence the masses to vote for the constitution.

Protesters in Alexandria besieged al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque after its imam, Sheikh Ahmed al-Mahallawi, urged people to vote "yes" in the referendum.
