Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi arrived to Cairo on Wednesday evening with other Iranian officials to discuss regional affairs with the Egyptian government.

During the two-day visit, Salehi is expected to meet with Algerian diplomat al-Akhdar al-Ibrahimi, Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr.

The visit will focus on means to develop bilateral relations between Egypt and Iran and ending the Syrian crisis in light of the recent initiative introduced by President Bashar al-Assad, reported the Middle East News Agency.

Salehi will also address the possibility of holding the Islamic Summit in Cairo and meet with the newly elected Coptic Christian Pope Tawadros and Azhar Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb.

He will meet with Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Mursi on Thursday to deliver an official message from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Iranian news agency on the other hand reported that the FM's visit came as a response to an invitation from his Egyptian counterpart.

This is the second visit that the senior Iranian official has paid to Egypt following the election of Mursi as president and the victory of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. The first visit was in September to attend meetings held by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt to discuss the Syrian crisis.

Mursi visited Iran in August to attend the non-aligned movement summit in the first visit of a top Egyptian official to Tehran in more than 30 years. Relations were strained between the two countries under the rule of former President Hosni Mubarak.
