CAIRO, Jan 11 (Aswat Masriya)- One "terrorist" was killed and an officer was injured during a border guard chase of two cars attempting to escape on Egypt's south-west  border, the armed forces spokesman said on Sunday.

During a border patrol in the Wahat area on Saturday, two cars were seen attempting to escape, said Armed Forces Spokesman Mohamed Samir in a statement.

"The border patrol began chasing them and a crossfire occurred that resulted in catching a car and the killing of one of the terrorist elements," said Samir.

The exchange of fire also resulted in the injury of an officer of the military, Samir added.

Militants have stepped up attacks targeting security forces in Egypt, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula, since the army's ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, which followed mass protests against his rule.

Unidentified gunmen attacked a military checkpoint in the Farafra Oasis in southern Egypt in July 2014, leaving 21 security personnel killed.

Egypt's Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim announced last September the elimination of a group of "terrorists" responsible for the Farafra attack, alongside other attacks.
