Hardcore fans of Cairo-based Al-Ahly football club, Ultras Ahlawy and Ultras Devils, are calling for a protest Friday ahead of the expected verdict on those charged with their involvement in the February 2012 Port Said football massacre.

Over 70 people were killed on 1 February last year, when Ahly fans were attacked by supporters of Port Said's team Masry, who stormed the pitch at the close of the match. Seventy-three defendants including nine security officials, three Masry football club officials and a number of fans are on trial for their suspected role in Egypt's worst football disaster: the final ruling will be pronounced on 26 January.

Friday's planned protests will be held on Tahrir square, where families of the slain fans are expected to be present.

Mass protests are also scheduled on the day of the verdict, which will fall a day after the second anniversary demonstrations for 2011's January 25 Revolution.
